I was driving on my way home last year with my family from Manila to San Juan. While at Otis, a truck who was not in its proper lane at the Quirino Ext- Unilever stoplight almost hit us while the truck driver was turning left to Unilever. I changed lane to avoid a possible accident. My dad told me that I am in the right of way, but I replied to him, “I won’t risk our lives just for that, and most of all we are riding an under-engineered passenger van, it ain’t no Volvo“. As I continued on driving home, I realized that we should drive defensively all the time, especially that there are road users that just don’t care about us–the majority of the motoring public–at all.
Here’s a list of the most selfish road users (hazards) that we should watch out for, because no matter how much we want to get rid of them, they are already part of our motoring culture, and we should just get used to it, they make our motoring lives challenging. I don’t really need to explain why I had identified them as road hazards:
(Most of them have a signature move: Swerve to the left, then swerve to the right, with no signal lights)
1. Under-disciplined Underbone Riders
2. Buses
3. Jeepneys esp “the Patoks”
4. Taxis
5. Trucks
6. Tricycles
7. Spoiled Brats a.k.a. those under-disciplined kids who were given cars by irresponsible parents at an age where maturity is not yet in their vocabulary
8. Politician / VIP Convoys
9. Kuligligs
10. Herd of Cyclists
