Six drivers participated in the opening leg of the 2013 Winds Formula Philippines Series on April 5 and 7, 2013 at Batangas Racing Circuit (BRC). The first leg was a double race event where two races were held in one day, one race in the morning and another race in the afternoon.
Batangas Racing Circuit is approximately a 3.7km international race circuit situated at heart of Rosario, Batangas. Numerous motorsport events, ranging from open wheel racing, touring cars, track days and drag racing, are held in this track all throughout the year.
Apart from Sung Joon Park and Jeremy San Diego, other participants including veteran Japanese racers like Teriyuki Yoshida (2012 Super-FJ Tsukuba Series 1st-Runner up), Shinyo Sano (international Supermoto rider), Yabushita (Formula Junior 1600 pilot) and Tomohiko Matsui (karter) are racing this 2013 Winds Formula Philippines Season.
The race follows the usual Formula 1 race format: first they practice, then run for qualifying sessions, and last the race proper itself. 30 minutes of practice time are given to the drivers to warm up the cars and prepare for the race. In the qualifying sessions, the drivers were given 30 minutes to set the fastest lap time around the track and this will determine from what position the drivers will start at the race. The driver with the fastest lap time will be given the pole position (1st position on the grid), followed by the next fastest driver and so on. In BRC, the race lasts for 10 laps around the track (approximately 30 minutes) and the first driver to cross the finish line is the winner or champion of the race.
At the end of the qualifying sessions and race proper the Zebra team placed at:
Race 1 Qualifying: 3rd-Jeremy San Deigo 5th-Sung Joon Park
Race 1: 2nd-Sung Joon Park 4th-Jeremy San Diego
Race 2 Qualifying: 3rd-Jeremy San Deigo 5th-Sung Joon Park
Race 2: 2nd-Sung Joon Park 6th-Jeremy San Diego
Race Report
Race 1 Qualifying:
The first qualifying session concluded with Teruki Yoshida in pole position, followed by fellow Japanese driver Shinyo Sano in second, and Jeremy San Diego in third. Yousuke Yabushita gained fourth, with Sung Joon Park taking fifth place, with Tomohiko Matsui filling up the last grid position.
Race 1 began before lunchtime, with a bristling start by both San Diego and Park, acquiring first and second positions respectively going into the first corner. Sano encountered a problem and retired on the opening lap. Yoshida, however, battled past Park with sheer pace and also regained the lead from San Diego on the third lap. Tomohiko Matsui later also retired and San Diego spun out on the seventh lap after a losing a rear wheel due to a broken lug nut. By the end of the first race, only three drivers remained with Yoshida in first place, Park finishing in second maintaining a good lead over Yabushita who finished third.
Race 2 Qualifying:
The second qualifying session later concluded after lunch. Amid the heat of the afternoon, Yoshida once again claims pole position, and the rest of the grid finishing essentially in the same positions as they did during the first qualifying session.
Race 2:
The second race commenced in the late afternoon, and a jump start by San Diego forced him slow to a stop just as the starting lights went out, dropping him to last place. San Diego would later be the first to retire, going off track while fighting back for position. Japanese drivers Yoshida and Sano had a heated battle for first place in a number of laps before Sano retired due to a gearbox problem. Park and Yabushita (running third and fourth respectively before Sano’s retirement) were then competing for second place until Yabushita crashed after the last corner while trying to pass Park, who proceeded on with a trouble-free race to the finish line. The race concluded again with Yoshida in first place and Park in second, but Tomohiko Matsui finished in third place due to the retirements of San Diego, Sano and Yabushita.
