It was a boring Saturday afternoon, I was supposed to go to Alabang to meet somebody, but because of a barber who can't spare even a hundred pesos for his toll fee, everything I planned on that Saturday was cancelled. So, I just decided to drive my family to this mall at Ortigas Center because they planned to go shopping that day. On our way to Ortigas, I remembered my good friend, Old School Car scene god father, Manny Martinez, called me in Thursday asking me if I can come to a car show in Meralco compound where he will be participating. Since the mall where my family is going is near Meralco, I decided to drop by at the show out, and of course, I grabbed the chance to cover the car show.
This car show is not just any ordinary car show, this is a show funded by the MVP Auto Group, a car club composed of employees from the companies of businessman Manny V. Pangilinan. The car show was titled: The MVP Celebrity Auto Show. This is a car show that showcased the vehicles of top celebrities from TV5, a Manny V. Pangilinan owned broadcast media and entertainment company.
On display are the cars of Arnel Ignacio, Willie Revillame and Aga Mulach. Willie Revillame displayed his most expensive cars, it's a collection that costs around Php100,000,000.00 (personal estimation only, including taxes). The collection is composed of a Ferrari 458 Italia, a Lamborghini Gallardo, an Audi R8, and a Bentley Continental GT. Aga Mulach displayed his Mercedes Benz G-Class. Arnel Ignacio displayed his classic cars, a red Porsche 911 convertible and a red Ferrari 360 Modena. I didn't really bother finding out if there are other TV5 actor owned cars in the show because I find the other show cars owned by a regular Joe like me more interesting. I know in my life that I will never ever get to buy those cars, unless I find out how to redeem a Yamashita loot. As I look closer to these so called celebrity cars, in my opinion, I think that money can't buy automotive taste. I seriously believe that Arnel has finer taste than Willie when it comes to cars. The only car that matches Willie is his Bentley Continental GT (now, this should be taken as a compliment, because the Bentley is the finest car when it comes to style and personality when you talk about Willie's cars). Arnel on the other hand, showed how he kept his Ferrari and Porsche in pristine condition even if they are already old. Willie only showed us how rich and powerful he is--that's it. Even if Arnel Ignacio is gay, he is actually more car guy than Willie Revillame. Arnel's one of the celebrity car guys that I give much respect aside from Dominic Ochoa.
Aside from the cars of TV5 actors, car show regulars--the real car show celebrities--also displayed their cars. My favorite car club of em' all, the Old Schooler Auto Club, has two displays, the Toyota Corona Silver Edition of Jojo Coloma, he came with his wife, Jing, and the 1976 Toyota Corolla of Manny Martinez. Right in between the Toyotas of OAC was the 1969 Mini Cooper of Ervil Espin, this was the first time he joined a car show displaying his Mini which he bought for Php350,000.00 and changed his Gen 1 Toyota Vios for it--now he is truly a car guy. My racing league, the Philippine Autocross Championship Series, who's also a sponsor of the MVP Celebrity Auto Show, has two displays of autocross race cars--the Lancer EL of 2012 National Champion Danby Yaptinchay, that was evolved into a Lancer Evolution, and the 1st Gen Toyota Vios of autocross class champion Mars Delos Reyes.
For me, the most outstanding ride of the show was TV5 weather reporter and MVP Auto Group member Ice Martinez's monstrous Toyota Land Cruiser 80. Modified in Baguio to make it a serious off-roader, Ice uses her Land Cruiser 80 for weekend getaways. For me it was outstanding for three reasons, 1. the Land Cruiser 80 is one of the best Land Cruisers ever made, even better than the Prado series, 2. the Land Cruiser I am talking about stands very high, it has the capability of going to any terrains--literally (you may check the photos below), and 3. this tall Land Cruiser is driven by a fine lady who updates us about the weather situation of our country. Now, tell me does she matches her truck or not? Because for me she surely does.
The show also have interesting displays like two show modified Jeepneys, two fully restored and female themed Volkswagen Beetles, a restored Mitsubishi Lancer singkit, a Ford F550 monster pick-up, a group of Mitsubishi Mirages, JSK's Veilside kitted Mazda RX7 Tokyo Drift Replica (a replica of the car that Han used in the Fast and Furious movie Tokyo Drift), Multi-Marz Cars's Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder and Chevrolet Corvette, and the Mitsubishi Lancers of Team High Octane / Team Full Throttle, where my fellow autocross racer Denmark Silorio is a part of it. There's also the Monster Energy Drink booth, where I had a short chat with their marketing assistant, Gigi. And the Race Chip booth which are filled with beautiful ladies. FHM Model Alyzza Agustin graciously accommodated me in the Race Chip booth, and because of a common friend, I was able to ask her to have a photo-op in our Mini and 1976 Toyota Corolla. Steven Yu of Power Wheels and Andy Rodriguez of C! Magazine judged the competition.
I get to mingle with different types of car and media people during the show. I was able to approach Ms. Camille Abadicio, a TV5 reporter who happens to be a fellow United Methodist. I don't have the guts to approach Camille in church activities, but since I am in a more comfortable territory, I was able to greet her. Camille's the one who reported about the MVP Celebrity Auto Show on TV5. Ice Martinez also happens to be the niece of my good friend, Manny Martinez, and because of that, Kuya Manny introduced me to Ice personally. Ice and I had a little chat about her Land Cruiser 80. Actress Alice Dixon also went around the show, I don't know if she has a car on display there, but I am happy that she smiled at my camera when I asked her for a snap shot.
It actually feels surreal that evening because I was able to see my car culture idols Old Schooler Auto Club founder, Manny Martinez and Philippine Autocross Championship Series race director, Danny Santiago, all together in one event. I was amazed with the fact that the people I know, actually know each other that well. But hey, I am the newcomer. They are already the legends before I became super active in the car culture scene. Kuya Manny and Kuya Danny are the real car celebrities I look up to.
Before I start my car upon leaving the show, I realized that celebrities are humans too. They are no better than us even though they own cars that most of us might never get to own, we are all humans--being a celebrity is just part of their jobs, and their luxury cars are just fruits of their labors (which I believe with hard work and blessings from God, we too can own such precious rides). Thus, the MVP Celebrity Auto Show was indeed a celebrity filled event, even though we didn't get to mingle with the stars of TV5 (and didn't get to compare myself to Derek Ramsay), everyone in the show are celebrities in their own right equally. The people who participated and came to the MVP Celebrity Auto Show were the ones who gave life to this momentous event, and that makes them celebrities.
