Slalom is a motorsport discipline that is usually held in parking lots or closed streets that makes the race driver navigate a race track that is filled with obstacles like hairpins, chicane, gates and 360 degree turns. Almost every car is welcome here, but a small front engine rear wheel drive hatchback a.k.a. the Toyota Starlet KP60 has the most advantage in this motorsport. Slalom is similar to Autocross, but a bit more complicated. I started slalom with the coaching of the late Slalom champion Jeffrey Menguito during the Marikina Grand Triple Race series last year.
The race was filled with motorsports enthusiast from every walks of life and champions from different disciplines. My idols Autocross Class Champion and MERALCO Supervisor Mars Delos Reyes and Professional Drift Champion and Ballroom Dancer Boodie Dabasol were there putting their skills to the test in this motorsport. But of course, being champions in their own disciplines, Boodie in his Mitsubishi Lancer I type and Toyota Corolla DX KE70 and Mars in his Gen 1 Toyota Vios were able to secure trophies in their respective classes. My fellow motoring blogger and fellow Korean car race driver, Jahan Kalam also won trophies in his classes with his Hyundai Elantra. Slalom regular ophthalmologist Dr. Peewee Mendiola of Team Big Chill won 1st place in all of the professional classes he joined in his KP60 Monster Toyota Starlet.
Other slalom / autocross regulars and my friends entrepreneur John Lazaga with his brother Jay, former FWD Carburetor class champion Christian Farinas, entrepreneur and professional drifter Joma Montaner, Nursing Graduate Denmark Silorio of MitsuLancerPH, ABS-CBN employee Dax Fernandez and business partners Doods Dela Rosa and Philippine National Police Officer Adon Enguito of Team G Motor Works were there to race and test their slalom racing skills. Everybody had fun that day.
The most notable racer that day is Xyza Montaner who had her first Slalom race in her 3SGE Yamaha Beams Engine Powered Toyota Corolla KE70. Xyza is the daughter of pro drifter Joma Montaner. She's one of the two lady drivers who joined the race in Sunday. Aside from her charming race beauty and charms, Xyza who's also a Medical Representative was able to place 1st in the Novice Stock Class and 2nd in the Ladies Class. Imagine winning trophies in your first race. It's every racers dream, and it's nice to witness that this fine young and beautiful lady was able to achieve it. She could be the next Gaby Dela Merced. Xyza is also planning to join the Philippine Autocross Championship Series and the Novice Drift Series. She's one tough female race driver.
As for me, I really had no intention in racing that day because I was conserving my money for the 1st leg of the Philippine Autocross which has a cheaper entry fee when you're a member of its exclusive club, but like any motorsports enthusiast who has deep passion for racing, I still raced that day not minding spending money for my entry fee. My friends say I did well in my car named Mariah, a full stock Kia Rio, though I ended up in 6th place among 8 racers in the Newbies class. My best time is 75 seconds. Over-all I still beat some guys who drives a car with better set-ups than mine. So even though I am not bringing home a trophy for the 1st leg, I still feel very satisfied. But the most satisfying feeling is that my friends Reizl Manuel, Kamir Prado and Noel Vengco told me that they are joining the next races in their respective cars. Everybody surely loves racing.
