Dancing; it is an activity where people show gracious moves whether it's a solo performance, a tandem, or a group of three or more. Each dancer must move in harmony with the music that is playing to be able to make the people appreciate their dancing. In motorsports, there is a discipline that is the equivalent of dancing, it is the dancesport of motorsports, this motorsport I am talking about requires the cars to move graciously and in harmony with the music that their engines and exhaust notes are playing. It's ballet, ballroom dancing, street jazz, street dance, and figure skating rolled into one motorsport discipline, and you need a special Front Engine Rear Wheel Drive Car with a Limited Slip Differential to perform this "Dance Motorsport"--DRIFTING!
Drifting started in Japan as early as 1970s, it is actually a technique used by Kunimitshu Takahasi at the All Japan Touring Car Championship Series when attacking corners. Keiichi Tsuchiya found the technique very impressive that he developed drifting into a motorsports in Japan. Now, drifting has spread all over the globe, with different drift competitions held in different countries. The most popular drift leagues today are the D1 grand prix and the Formula Drift series.
In the Philippines, drifting started in 2005 with the Countersteer series, but it is now disbanded. For the professional leagues we have the Lateral D Series organized by SprocketPH owner Ronnie Trinidad and the Drift Fest which is headed by Car Porn Racing and Victoria Court owner Ian King. For the amateur league, we have the Novice Drift Series which is organized by DMF Drift directed by pro drifter David Feliciano.
In March 9, 2013, DMF Drift lead by NDS race director David M. Feliciano started the first leg of the Novice Drift Series for this year. There are 20 drivers who are from different drift teams showed us how they dance with their cars by showing us great drifting skills. Teams participated in the Novice Drift Series are the Team G Motorworks of my good friend and slalom / autocross racing mentor Boodie Dabasol, the Team Autocraft of my hopefully soon to be spiritual mentor (because we both look at Motorsports as our ministry) Audel Sison, the Team Motul-Autoplus of Pacho Blanco and Carlos Gono, the Car Porn Racing team of Ian King, and the Toycool Garage team competed in the leg among others. The drifters of this leg was judged by three great professional drifters, Boodie Dabasol for the drifters' drifting style, Audel Sison for the drift angle, and Alex Perez of Team Yellow Cab judged the drifters' line.
My friends from Team G Motorworks entered 5 drivers. My fellow Slalom / Autocross race driver Jay Lazaga in his 4AGZE powered Toyota Corolla Liftback, Erick Suliguin in his Nissan Skyline, Cedric Cabanero in his Nissan Silvia, and the Marks in Corolla DXs, Mark Carino in his Black 3SGE powered Corolla DX and the Corona Guy Mark Bernardo in his Red Corolla DX. Ballroom Dancer Boodie Dabasol taught the whole team how to dance (drift) their cars.
There are two notable drift drivers in the series. Luis Gono being the youngest drifter in the competition who is only 14 years old. Luis is the son of Autoplus shop owner Carlos Gono. Ms. Tintin David from Team Autocraft also caught our attention as being the only female driver for the competition that day.
The most notable car was from Struan Wallace of Car Porn Racing having a Nissan Cefiro A31 powered with a 1UZFE Engine. The exhaust note of the car is incredible. It is definitely a Monster.
In the Novice Drift Series qualifying session, there should be 16 qualifiers out of 20 drivers, but only 14 has qualified for the tandem runs. Boodie, Audel and Alex meticulously judged the qualifying round that's why only 14 has made it to the tandem runs. Struan Wallace got the top qualifying position, while Erick Suliguin clocked in the fastest entry speed at 75KPH. Pocholo Hizon of Team Auto Craft qualified at 2nd.
In the top 16 tandem round, my friend Jay Lazaga went to head to head in his Corolla Lift Back against Tintin David who pilots a Silvia S14, Tintin won the drift battle. Meanwhile, the youngest drifter Luis Gono battled it out with the oldest drifter Lt. Dan Javier, Luis proved that age doesn't matter and qualified for the top 8. Wallace and Hizon only did bye runs since they are the top two qualifiers. It gave them an automatic seat in the top 8 round.
In the top 8 tandem round. Wallace was able to beat Suliguin, while Marc Ong was lucky to get away with a victory against Luis Gono whose Silvia S13 broke down. Cedric Cabanero and Tintin David also won their respective battles giving them a chance to compete in the Final 4.
During the final 4 run, Cedric Cabanero of G-Motorworks was able to beat Marc Ong of Car Porn Racing that gave him a 3rd place podium finish. For the battle for the first place, Tintin David graciously danced her Silvia against Struan Wallace who earned her the Novice Drift Series 1st leg Champion title. Tintin was very swift with her moves that made her Silvia move like a ballerina in the drift track. With Tintin's drift moves (and of course, my good friend Boodie being a great drifter and dancer) I decided to tag Drifting as the Dance Motorsport!

“With the Novice Drift Series, we are giving new drivers their chance to shine instead of being intimidated by competing with more experienced drivers. We’re also trying to show spectators the basic rules of drifting for them to develop a better level of appreciation for the motorsport,” - David M. Feliciano, Race Director of NDS.
